About France

Immigration to France
For citizens of the European Union a visa for living and working in France, except for the French overseas departments, is not needed to immigrate. Other countries which don't require a visa are.

  • Andorra
  • Switzerland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Monaco
  • The Holy See
  • San Marino

For all other citizens of other countries a visa is needed. You have to determine which visa is the right for you. There are three basic visa types to choose from:

  • Student visa
  • Long-stay visa
  • Work permit visa

Be sure to request the visa at least one month before your relocation, better several months before.

  • A monthly salary of 1000 Euro per adult
  • Passport (valid for 3 month after the last day of stay)
  • 4 visa application forms signed and filled out
  • A minimum of 5 recent passport size photographs
  • A proof of resident status
  • A proof of employment
  • Financial guarantees like:
    • Letter from your bank which is showing that you will be supported
    • Justification of retirement pension

Living and property
In France often the landlord is coming up for the brokerage. But you have to consider that already the pre-contract is tying. In that case you can better consult a notary.

If you plan to move to Paris, you should be aware of tremendous high rental costs. These are mostly located on a higher level than elsewhere.

Other important information
Different than in other countries, a tenant, who is in arrears with his rent, can't be abrogated easily. In France, people who are in a financial distress are protected statutory. Thus the landlord is sheltering himself by a rent loss insurance. You can request it when you are able to prove that you are employed perpetual and not under notice.

Working permit in France
For citizens of the European Union a working permit or a residence permit is not necessary. Though a Carte de Séjour is facilitating the visit to the authorities in great measure.

For citizens from non-European Union a carte de séjour is needed when they want to stay longer than 3 month.

Driving in France is expensive
Unfortunately the toll on French highways is turning the car-driving in an expensive issue. But therefore in France you don't have to pay a car tax like in Germany for example. Please remember to register your car at the local vehicle registration office.

Therefore you will need the following documents:

  • ID or passport
  • Registration certificate
  • Leasing or purchase contract
  • Evidence of exemption from VAT

Radio License Fee
In France a radio license fee has to be paid. But you don't have to care about the registration of your radio or TV, because the salesperson will register the devices for you.
